EMS KPIs: The Wellness Edition https://ambulance.org/sp_product/kpis-wellness/ Fri, 26 Jan 2024 14:07:36 +0000 https://ambulance.org/sp_product/ems-kpis-the-wellness-edition/

The EMS workplace has shifted; providers, middle managers and emerging executives are expecting health and wellness programs in the workplace. Gone are the days, where corporation’s welcome employees who show up to work sick. The human workplace has evolved. The body of research around longevity and human performance is growing and what organizational leaders once believed were wellness best practices has changed. Human performance and biohacking aren’t just for professional athletes. Whether you’re an experienced executive, middle manager, or clinical practitioner this session will leave you with optimal performance best practices you can begin to implement and teach others about tomorrow.

This presentation will leverage my many years studying and teaching human physiology, biology, microbiology, and neuroanatomy. We will consider the implications of and review the current research and science behind these human performance factors:

Poor gut health- the world of our gut microbiota and how we influence it
High cortisol levels and the effects of stress on the body
Sleep hygiene- brain health and sleep as emotional first aid
The effects of highly processed foods on our physical and mental health
Alcohol- why I never have a cocktail the night before a big speaking event
Hormonal changes- how low testosterone and menopause can impact work performance

Be a Duck: The Problem of Avoidance in EMS https://ambulance.org/sp_product/be-a-duck/ Mon, 22 Jan 2024 17:44:30 +0000 https://ambulance.org/sp_product/be-a-duck-the-problem-of-avoidance-in-ems/

Many EMT students are instructed that when they feel overwhelmed, they need to "be a duck"- paddling furiously under the water while everything stays smooth and calm on the surface. While this isn't terrible advice while actively running a call, many in emergency services take this advice to heart and embrace a brand of stoicism fairly unique to public safety. Avoidance is a nonadaptive coping style linked to increased risk of PTSD, burnout and suicide, yet it is the most commonly used method of coping with stress among EMS professionals. Types of avoidance coping such as dissociation, absenteeism and substance use will be explored. Learn healthier mechanisms to cope with adversity and ways to pass these skills along to your agency, creating a more resilient, present, and engaged workforce.

With the high cost to initial EMT programs, and the supply of new EMT students as compared to the national demand, creative programs such as recruit classes not only help to increase the number of new EMS providers available, but also provide a critical, and much needed bridge into extending the field of EMS into our urban settings. We will discuss how to not only setup a recruit program, but also work with key civic organizations to drive the growth of diversity in the workforce.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many organizations to close or reduce staffing in their offices to mitigate the risks of transmission. In the EMS workplace, employers have historically struggled to maintain a strong line of communication with their workforce. The pandemic has only exacerbated this problem. In the face of unprecedented turnover and other workforce challenges, HR professionals are working hard to engage employees in a deeper and more meaningful way. To attract and retain employees, HR professionals and other leaders are having to gain a broader understanding of those who seek employment in EMS beyond their professional aspirations. We will discuss how to balance this deeper understanding with maintaining a professional and compliant atmosphere and will highlight how the prior trend of employee self-service is being replaced by an employee oriented customer service model.

On Demand | Building a Total Compensation Package to Drive Recruitment & Retention https://ambulance.org/sp_product/totalcomp/ Wed, 16 Feb 2022 19:49:03 +0000 https://ambulance.org/sp_product/building-a-total-compensation-package-to-drive-recruitment-retention/

EMS organizations continue to struggle with attracting and retaining employees. Many organizations are adjusting wage scales, offering sign-on bonuses, and stipends as primary mechanism to attract candidates. However, employees are looking for employment that supports their lifestyle and are selecting careers based upon the quality of life it provides. Employers should build a total compensation package that supports their employees goals. In this session, the AAA’s HR and Operations Consultant, Scott Moore, will be joined by Nishan Mootafian, an experienced financial planner and partner to businesses. Nishan and Scott will discuss how employers can optimize and publicize their financial benefit offerings to gain the advantage with their existing employees and job candidates.

End Annual Reviews: Stop Ignoring Your Staff 364 Days a Year
Speaker: Scott Moore, Esq.
April 15, 2021 | 15:00 ET
Have you ever received a performance review that truly drove you to work harder? It is time for employers to rethink the manner and method of providing employee performance feedback. In fact, the concept of performance feedback needs to evolve from a formal annual process to a more fluid ongoing dialogue about the nature and quality of the workplace relationship. EMS organizations continue to struggle with retaining employees, both field personnel and frontline supervisors. This program will discuss why traditional employee performance feedback models often hurt performance. We will cover the latest research on what truly drives employee performance and the innovative ways that high performance teams are utilizing meaningful performance feedback tools in today’s workplace. Lastly, this session will discuss the important role that organizational culture plays in driving employee performance regardless of the performance feedback model your organization adopts. No matter the model, if your organizational culture does not support a transparent, trusting, and accountable relationship between leadership and your workforce, you will continue to struggle.

Staving off cynicism requires us to be active in breaking biases we have developed over years and hours of the job. We know what shifts are the toughest. We know who also gets those tough assignments. Our job requires that we be prepared for anything and often that is exactly what we have to manage.

Is it possible the racism and xenophobia could be the result of something else? Is it possible that we can change a situation by being changed ourselves?

We will spend this session not only looking at the social challenges but how we build our resilience through a cognitive and racial self-care approach.

On-Demand | Employee Benefits Captive Insurance for EMS https://ambulance.org/sp_product/employee-benefits-captive-insurance-for-ems/ Mon, 27 Jul 2020 15:12:04 +0000 https://ambulance.org/sp_product/employee-benefits-captive-insurance-for-ems/

A captive insurance company by definition is a Private Insurance Company (“PIC”) who’s sole insurance duty is to insure the risks of its owner, the owner being the business. Over the years, captive insurance has grown in popularity mainly due to the ability of the captive to run profitable over its life span. When the captive runs profitable, it directly benefits the insured business by way of dividends and/or lower insurance costs. There are many types of captive insurance companies on the market, some are owned by the members, some are owned by an insurance company and some are owned by the captive manager. If you are considering a captive solution, discovery of who owns and governs the captive is a very important first question.

On our call, we will discuss:
1. how a captive can shift insurance company profits back to the employer
2. how health care cost has no correlation with quality; in fact, its commonly inversely correlated
3. what common bond is shared amongst members; aka, “Am I right for a captive?”
4. trends within the managed care space, what exactly is RBP?
5. common myths within today’s COVID -19 health care delivery market

Ambulance companies continually push to have a seat at the “table” and think about market opportunities to increase revenue, but, when it comes to Health Insurance, most are allowing someone else sign their check book. That “someone else” is the insurance company attempting to pay us less! A captive is a solution that enables us to push back on our #2 spend!

If you’re willing to engage in the affairs of health care risk financing and management, statistics suggests, it will be a profitable decision.
